Lizard Tom is a small amigurumi lizard with an opening jaw, inner mouth, tongue, and crocheted-on fingers and toes. His charm comes from the playful articulated mouth and the unusual double-crochet body that gives him a long, sleek shape.

Rnd 2: sc inc, 7 sc, sc inc ×3 at tip, 7 sc, sc inc ×2 at other end

TONGUE:
Ch 10, starting from 3rd ch from hook: 8 hdc. Fasten off.

Notes

Main body uses dc (long stitch) as primary stitch — unusual for amigurumi. Stitch counts for Rnds 8–12 should be verified by crafter.

Lizard Tom — Upper Jaw + Lower Jaw + Assembly

UPPER JAW (flat piece, in dc):
Row 1: dc inc, 6 dc, dc inc (10)
Row 2: dc dec, 8 dc, dc dec (8)
Row 3: dc dec, 4 dc, dc dec (6)
Row 4: dc dec, 2 dc, dc dec (4)
Fasten off.

LOWER JAW (flat piece, in hdc):
Row 1: 6 hdc (from a chain start) (6)
Row 2: hdc dec, 2 hdc, hdc dec (4)

ASSEMBLY: Join Inner Mouth to Lower Jaw and crochet together; work one round of sc around entire mouth edge. Upper jaw picks up 8 sts; lower jaw picks up 6 sts (see photo for reference).

Notes

Upper jaw in dc, lower jaw in hdc. Assembly photo shows final mouth orientation.

Lizard Tom — Eyes + Hands + Feet

EYES (make 2):
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: 6 sc (6)
Fasten off and sew to body.

HANDS (make 2) — attach directly to body:
Insert hook at appropriate position between Rnds 12–13 on body, working in BLO.
Ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch from hook ×2, ch 2, sl st ×2, ch 2, sl st ×2, then 4 sc back at base.
(Creates 3 finger-like extensions.)

FEET (make 2) — attach directly to body:
Insert hook at appropriate position between Rnds 7–8 on body, working in BLO.
Ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook ×2, ch 2, sl st ×2, then 5 sc back at base.
(Creates 2 toe-like extensions.)

Notes

Hands and feet are worked directly into the body, not made separately. BLO = back loop only throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the body worked in double crochet instead of single crochet?

The pattern intentionally uses dc as the main body stitch to create a longer, sleeker lizard shape. This is unusual for amigurumi, so be aware the looser dc fabric may show stuffing more than tight sc work.

How are the hands and feet attached?

They aren't made separately. You insert your hook directly into the body in back loops only (BLO) and crochet them on in place: hands between Rnds 12-13 (three finger extensions) and feet between Rnds 7-8 (two toe extensions).

How do I assemble the mouth?

Join the inner mouth to the lower jaw and crochet them together, then work one round of sc around the entire mouth edge. The upper jaw picks up 8 stitches and the lower jaw picks up 6; use the assembly photo for correct orientation.

The stitch counts for Rnds 8-12 look tricky. Anything to watch?

Yes. The designer notes that the counts for Rnds 8-12 should be verified as you go, since these rounds mix sc, hdc, and dc with increases and decreases. Count after each round and compare to the bracketed total.
