Fold the strip in half lengthwise and sl st the stitches together pair by pair back to the start, stuffing as you go. Then coil the stuffed tube into a snail spiral and whip-stitch (S-shaped stitches) along the slip-stitched ridge to hold the coil.

Antennae (make 2, grain color): double-chain foundation of 10 ch, leave long tails.

Body (grain color)
Lower body: Ch 22; from 3rd ch: hdc-inc, 12 hdc, 4 dc(t), 2 sc, (5 sc in end st); other side: 2 sc, 4 dc, 12 hdc, hdc-inc; sl st, cut.
Upper body:
Row 1: Ch 21; from 2nd ch: inc, 18 sc, 3 sc in end st; other side: 18 sc, inc
Row 2: 21 sc, (dc, hdc, dc) around the tip, 21 sc, sl st
Row 3: 21 sc, (dc, hdc-inc), (hdc, sl st, hdc), (hdc-inc, dc), 21 sc, sl st. Leave a long tail (this end is the head).

Assembly: attach the antennae first — thread the two chain tails through the top of the head and knot inside. Match the wide end of the lower body to the head, whip-stitch pair by pair to the tail; fold the last 3 sts of the upper body and sew to the opposite side; finish sewing around the head. Sew the shell onto the body, hide ends, glue on the eyes.

Notes

Raffia interpretation of the Coach leather snail charm (¥650 original). In this author's shorthand: t=dc, f=hdc, e=sl st, w=3 sc in one st, fv=hdc-inc. BLO rows give the shell its ridged spiral texture.

Frequently asked questions

How does the flat strip become a shell?

The long BLO-ridged strip is folded in half, slip-stitched closed while stuffing, then coiled into a spiral and whip-stitched along the ridge.

Where does the hanging loop go?

Mark the 2nd sc of Row 22 — that stitch becomes the hanging point for the cord.
