A caramel pudding that is really a small storage pot: the pale yellow base is worked as an open cup and the brown caramel top lifts off like a lid, complete with a drip edge, a coil of cream and a cherry.

Rnd 8: *6 sc, inc*, repeat 6 times (48)
Rnd 9: *7 sc, inc*, repeat 6 times (54)
Rnd 10-11: 54 sc in BLO, no shaping (54)

Rnd 20: *5 sc, dec*, repeat 6 times (36)
Rnd 21: 36 sc, no shaping (36)
Fasten off. The finished cup shape is the body of the pudding and the inside is left open so it works as a small pot.

Notes

Held double throughout with a 2.15mm hook in 4-ply cotton (pale yellow for the pudding). Working Rnds 10-11 in back loops only creates the crisp ridge at the top rim.

Cherry (single strand)
Rnd 1: 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: 6 inc (12)
Rnd 3: *sc, inc*, repeat 6 times (18)
Rnd 4-5: 18 sc, no shaping (18)
Rnd 6: *sc, dec*, repeat 6 times (12)
Rnd 7: 6 dec (6)
Stuff lightly and close.

Cream / Salad Topping (single strand)
Work a crocheted cord 30 stitches long, in 6 segments in total, then coil it on top of the caramel.

Assembly: sit the caramel top over the pudding base so the drip edge hangs down the sides, add the cream coil and sew the cherry on top.

Notes

Second half of the pudding pot: the brown caramel lid, the cherry and the whipped-cream cord. The graded tall stitches in Rnd 10 make the uneven caramel drips. Hook 2.15mm; colours crimson, cream, chestnut and pale yellow.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the yarn held double?

The pudding base and the caramel top are both worked with two strands together, which gives the pot firm sides that stand up on their own. The cherry and cream use a single strand.

What makes the caramel drips?

Rnd 10 of the top mixes dc, tr and dtr in graded groups, so the edge dips down at uneven lengths like melted caramel.

Why work some rounds in back or front loops only?

Rnds 10-11 of the base are BLO and Rnds 8-9 of the top are FLO. Those loop-only rounds create the crisp horizontal ridges where the shape changes.

Can I actually use it as a container?

Yes — the base is left open and unstuffed, so it holds stitch markers, rings or other small items with the caramel top sitting over it as a lid.
