A five-pointed star basket in chunky chenille yarn. The star base is built from hdc shell points, then textured sides are worked in alternating rows of sc and sc-one-row-down.

Star Storage Basket Rnd 1: Ch 8 and sl st into a ring, then work 15 hdc into the ring (15) Rnd 2: 5× [hdc-inc, (hdc, ch 1, sl st, ch 1, hdc), hdc-inc] Rnd 3: Sl st across to the second stitch, then 5× [2 hdc, 3 hdc into the ch space, ch 1, sl st, ch 1, 3 hdc into the ch space, 2 hdc, skip 2] Rnd 4: Ch 1, turn, then sc around working into the far half-loops only Rnd 5: *sc, sc worked one row down*, repeat around Rnd 6: *sc worked one row down, sc*, repeat around Rnd 7-9: repeat Rnds 5-6 Rnd 10: sl st around Finishing: sl st around the half-loops left free in Rnd 3 to neaten the star-shaped base edge.

Frequently asked questions
What gives the sides their texture?
Rnds 5-9 alternate a normal sc with an sc worked into the row below, which builds up a soft ribbed surface.
Why sl st around the half loops at the end?
Rnd 4 is worked into the far half-loops only, which leaves the near loops of Rnd 3 free. Slip stitching around them neatens the edge of the star base.
How big is the basket?
It comes out as a small desk basket — big enough for stitch markers, hair ties and other small notions.
