Hexagon Star Mesh Tote — Openwork Net Body & Straps

Yarn: tape/raffia cotton, light yellow, 50 g x 3 skeins (~127 g used), worked single strand. Hook: 3.5 mm.

Foundation: Ch 57, plus 1 turning ch (ch 58 total).

Body — net / mesh ground
Work the lower body in an openwork net pattern: rows of sc joined by ch spaces forming a diagonal trellis (each sc anchored into the ch space of the previous row, with ch bars between). Continue the mesh for the depth of the bag, keeping the net repeat consistent across all 57 working stitches.

Star band
Near the top, work a band of six-pointed star (hexagon) motifs: clusters of dc radiating into points separated by ch loops, set across the top of the mesh ground to form the row of stars.

Straps
The two top straps taper in from the body: decrease the stitch count at each side over about 20 rows per strap until the strap reaches full length, then join/seam the strap ends to form the shoulder handle.

Notes

Hook: 3.5 mm. Yarn: light-yellow tape/raffia cotton, single strand, ~127 g total (3 x 50 g skeins). Symbol chart: ch 57+1 foundation, openwork net/mesh body, a band of six-pointed star motifs near the top, two tapering straps (~20 rows each). Chart symbols are small; stitch counts per net repeat are not individually legible, so follow the chart visually for the trellis spacing.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for this tote?

The sample uses about 127 g of light-yellow tape/raffia cotton, worked single strand, which is roughly three 50 g skeins. Buy three skeins to be safe, since net patterns and strap length can vary the total.

What hook size should I use?

Use a 3.5 mm hook with the single-strand tape/raffia cotton, as specified in the pattern. A slightly larger hook will open up the mesh further if you want an even airier look.

How many stitches should each net repeat have?

The symbol chart's stitch counts per net repeat aren't individually legible, so follow the chart visually: start from the ch 57 (+1 turning ch) foundation and keep the trellis spacing of sc anchored into the previous row's ch spaces consistent across all 57 working stitches.

How are the straps made?

The two top straps taper in from the body by decreasing the stitch count at each side over about 20 rows per strap. Once each strap reaches full length, join or seam the strap ends together to form the shoulder handle.
