A bold six-petal flower coaster in the Marimekko poppy style - a solid single crochet centre with six wide petals fanned out in double crochet and a contrast treble edging. Flat, quick and reversible enough to use as a trivet.

Marimekko-Style Flower Coaster — Symbol Chart Construction read off the chart (6 identical petals worked around a solid centre): CENTRE DISC Rnd 1: Sc in a starting ring. Rnd 2: Work sc and inc around to widen the disc (the chart shows inc symbols spaced evenly). Rnd 3: Sc around, with inc spaced to keep the circle flat. The ch symbols (-0-) mark the turning chains at the start of each round. PETALS (x6, worked outward from the centre disc in short rows) Each petal is worked over one sixth of the centre disc: Row 1: Dc across the petal base, with dc inc at the sides to fan the petal out. Rows 2-4: Continue in dc, working dc inc at both edges of each row so the petal widens; the small oval symbols at the petal edges are ch sts that shape the curve. Final row (contrast colour, shown in blue on the chart): Tr and dc worked across the petal top to round it off, ending with sl st into the adjacent petal. Repeat for all 6 petals, then fasten off and weave in ends. The red arrow on the chart marks the starting petal.

Do I have to follow the symbol chart?
The original is a symbol-only chart with no written counts. The construction is a solid sc centre, then six petals worked outward in dc with increases at the petal edges, and a final contrast round of tr across each petal top - so you can also just read the chart round by round from the marked starting petal.
Can I make it bigger?
Add one more increase round to the centre disc before splitting into petals; each petal then starts over a wider base and the finished coaster grows proportionally.
