The beak has two parts: an upper beak (an outer piece and an inner piece sewn together) and a lower beak. All worked in yellow.

Upper Beak — Inner Piece
Rnd 1: Ch 13, starting in the 2nd ch: 11 sc, 5 sc in the last ch, then 11 sc along the other side (27)

Joining the Upper Beak
Do not fasten off the outer piece; the next round joins the two layers.
Rnd 1: 3 sl st along the outer piece, skip 3 sts, sl st. Lay the inner piece under the outer piece with wrong sides together. Mark the centre stitch at the tip of each piece. Work the next stitches through both layers to join them, 38 sl st, removing the markers as you go and keeping the pieces aligned. Then continue in the outer piece only, skip 3 sts, 3 sl st (44). Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Tail (start in dark brown)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. The legs can be lightly stuffed; stuffing is optional.

Assembly
Pin every piece in place before you sew anything.
- Pin the straight pinched edge of the upper beak and sew it to the head between Rnd 11 and Rnd 13, centred between the eyes. Sew through the outer layer only.
- Pin the lower beak under the upper beak so its last 8 sc line up with the upper beak. Sew along those stitches, then take a few extra stitches at the base of the beak into the neck to hold it steady.
- Pin the head feathers to the top of the head in overlapping layers and sew them down with a few small stitches on each side.
- Pin the wings between Rnd 35 and Rnd 36 of the body. Sew only the straight edge down, with the feathers pointing toward the back.
- Sew the tail to the back of the body at Rnd 14-15.
- Sew the tops of the legs to the underside of the body between Rnd 55 and Rnd 56, roughly 6 sts apart at the front. Set the feet so the pelican stands, with the toes pointing up.
