Yoshi Brooch — Stitch Placement Guide

This is a close-up stitch diagram (not a numbered round chart). It illustrates a row of double crochet stitches and marks where to insert the hook for the next row.

Guide:
- The pink arrow labeled "hook here" points to the top loops of the stitch in the previous row.
- Insert your hook under both top loops (the two horizontal strands forming the V at the top of each stitch) when working the next row.

Notes

Reference/technique illustration accompanying the Yoshi brooch pattern. Shows correct hook insertion point at the top of the previous stitch.

Nintendo Yoshi Brooch — Symbol Chart (Head & Body)

This is a freeform symbol chart for the Yoshi fridge-magnet brooch, worked in colorwork rather than plain rounds. Symbols: chain = ch, F = hdc, T = tr (treble), V = inc, x = sc.

Head (top section):
- White crown: a row of chains across the top with small yellow bobble/dot accents.
- Crest: clusters of white hdc (F) standing up, flanked by red treble (T) spikes on the left.
- Head shaping: rows of green treble (T) worked in a curve, with green inc (V) at the rounded sides and a green chain (ch) base row.

Body / shell (bottom section):
- Green mesh of sc (x) and ch worked in diagonal rows forming the rounded body.
- Red hdc (F) worked as a fan/radiating cluster at the lower left (shell pattern).
- Lower edge trimmed with green hdc/treble (F/T) and inc (V) shaping; brown accent group (sc, V, hdc, F, T) marks a detail at the lower right.

Work the head and body as separate symbol motifs in their respective colors, then assemble into the brooch.

Notes

Colorwork symbol chart. Hook 2.0mm. Yarn: 4-ply combed cotton in white, green, red, brown (colors 06, 23, 24, 25). Black oval safety eyes 5 x 6.5mm. Chart is freeform colorwork (not strict numbered rounds); follow symbol shapes per color section.

Frequently asked questions

What yarn and hook does this brooch use?

It uses 4-ply combed cotton in white, green, red, and brown (color numbers 06, 23, 24, 25) with a 2.0 mm hook, which keeps the colorwork detail crisp at brooch scale.

How do I read this chart since it isn't numbered rounds?

It's a freeform colorwork symbol chart, not strict numbered rounds. Follow the symbol shapes within each color section: chain = ch, F = hdc, T = tr (treble), V = inc, and x = sc.

Where do I insert my hook for each new row?

Insert your hook under both top loops of the previous stitch (the two horizontal strands forming the V at the top), as shown by the 'hook here' arrow in the technique illustration.

How is the brooch put together?

Work the head and body as separate symbol motifs in their respective colors, then assemble them into the brooch and add the black oval safety eyes (5 x 6.5 mm).
