Afghan Flower & Smiley Charm — Flower Centre, Petals, Smiley Discs, Cord & Assembly Yarn: 4-ply cotton, single strand. Hook: 2mm. FLOWER CENTRE Rnd 1: Ch 1, *sc* x5, sl st to join Rnd 2: Ch 1, *sc inc* x5, sl st to join Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc, sc inc* x5, sl st to join, fasten off (15 sts) PETALS (5 petals — bullion/Afghan-flower technique) The 15-st centre is divided into 5 petals of 3 sts each; each petal is built from two passes per stitch. Picking up the first back bump of each pass can feel tight. Stitch 1, pass 1: Ch 5. Draw up a loop through each of the 5 back bumps of that chain in turn (6 loops on hook), then draw a loop through the 1st centre st (7 loops on hook). Yarn over and work the loops off two at a time. Stitch 1, pass 2: Ch 1. Draw up a loop through each of the 6 back bumps in turn (7 loops on hook), then a loop through the 1st centre st (8 loops on hook). Work the loops off two at a time. Stitch 2, pass 3: Draw up a loop through each of the 6 back bumps (7 loops), then a loop through the 2nd centre st (8 loops). Work off two at a time. Pass 4: Same as pass 3. Pass 5: Same, but draw the last loop through the 3rd centre st. Pass 6: Insert into the 2nd-from-last back bump, draw up loops through 5 back bumps (6 loops), then a loop through the 3rd centre st (7 loops). Work off two at a time. After the last pass, sl st into each of the 5 back bumps, then sl st again into the 3rd centre st. Next petal: draw up a loop in the next centre st and repeat from pass 1. Repeat for all 5 petals. After the final petal, sl st again into the 1st centre st and fasten off. Make 2 identical flowers. Fasten off and weave in ends on one; leave a long tail on the other for sewing. SMILEY DISC (make 2) Rnd 1: Ch 1, *sc* x6, sl st to join Rnd 2: Ch 1, *sc inc* x6, sl st to join Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc, sc inc* x6, sl st to join Rnd 4: Ch 1, *sc inc, 2 sc* x6, sl st to join, fasten off invisibly Face: embroider the features from the wrong side of the disc. Fasten off and weave in on one disc; leave a long tail on the other for sewing. TWO-TONE BRAIDED CORD Work a two-colour crochet cord to any length you like; the cord shown is about 23cm. ASSEMBLY Hold the pieces back to back with stitches aligned and sew around. When about one and a half petals remain open, start stuffing gradually as you close.
Notes
Afghan-flower (bullion-loop) charm paired with a smiley disc on a two-colour cord, worked at 2mm in single-strand 4-ply cotton. Finished cord about 23cm. Note this diagram is a separate pattern included in the same post as the horse charm.
Frequently asked questions
How is the horse assembled?
Work two matching flat body pieces, hold them together and single crochet around the whole edge with an increase at each corner, then slip stitch once around in a contrast colour for the outline.
What is the loop technique in the flower pattern?
The Afghan flower petals are built from bullion-style loops: you chain, draw a loop up through each back bump in turn so the loops stack on the hook, then work them off two at a time. It is fiddly at first but the sequence repeats for all five petals.
