Stitches used: ch, dc, sc, sl st

Summer Vest — Main Body Stitch Pattern

Worked flat in rows (chart read bottom to top; arrows show working direction, blue triangle = turning chain at row start, red oval = slip-stitch join).

Foundation: Ch a multiple to desired width (the sample uses 78 ch for the mesh foundation).
Row 1: Working into the foundation chain, sc/dc base row across to set the stitches.
Row 2: Ch for turning, then dc in each stitch across, working in groups with ch-1 spaces between paired dc to form the open mesh.
Rows 3-5 (and repeat upward): Ch to turn, *dc, ch 1* across, placing the dc into the stitches/spaces of the previous row to continue the vertical-bar mesh pattern. Repeat this row for the full body length.

The pattern is a simple repeating dc-and-chain mesh; continue the row repeat until the body reaches the required length.

Notes

Main body chart for the summer vest, worked flat in rows. Yarn: #5 lace-weight cotton (4 skeins). Hook 2.0mm. Foundation 78 ch. Work 5 rounds per reference, then shape underarm decreases equally on both sides. Chart legend: stitch-placement marker, slip-stitch join, turning chain, working direction.

Summer Vest — Underarm Shaping & Armhole Edging

Worked flat in rows, continuing the dc mesh from the main body chart (rows numbered at right).

Rows 34-36 (Body): Continue the *dc, ch 1* mesh across the full width.
Underarm decrease (rows ~36+): At each underarm, slip-stitch / skip stitches to drop the armhole stitches, then decrease at both armhole edges equally so the two sides match. This splits the work to leave the armhole openings.
Armhole edging (rows up to 66): Work the two front/back panels up each side of the armhole opening, continuing the dc mesh straight up (no further increases) to the shoulder at row 66.

Work both armhole sides identically.

Notes

Armhole/shoulder shaping chart for the summer vest. "袖口钩织" = armhole edging worked up each side; "腋下减针" = underarm decrease, done equally on both sides. Rows run from 34 (body) up to 66 (shoulder). Hook 2.0mm, #5 lace-weight cotton.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn and what hook do I need?

The sample uses 4 skeins of #5 lace-weight cotton with a 2.0 mm hook, which gives the fine, open mesh its drape.

How many chains do I start with?

The sample foundation is 78 chains for the mesh, but since this is a simple repeating *dc, ch 1* pattern you can chain a multiple to your desired width.

How is the vest shaped and constructed?

It's worked flat in rows. Continue the dc mesh for the body, then at the underarms decrease equally on both sides to drop the armhole stitches, and work each side straight up to the shoulder (about row 66 in the chart). Work both armhole sides identically.

How do I read the chart?

Read it bottom to top; arrows show the working direction, a blue triangle marks the turning chain at the start of a row, and a red oval marks a slip-stitch join.
