Zongzi Dumpling Bag — Net-Stitch Body & Flap

Yarn: 4-ply cotton, sport weight. Hook: 3.0 mm. Worked in a green-gradient colorway (darker green for the body, lighter for the flap).

Body (darker section)
Foundation: Ch 40, join with sl st into a ring (mind the direction — don't twist the chain inside-out).
Rnd 1: Ch 1 (does not count as st), 40 sc worked into both the back bump and half-stitch of the foundation, join with sl st (40).
Rnd 2: Ch 1 (does not count), 40 sc (40).
Rnd 3: *Sc, drop-down sc* 20 times — work each drop-down sc into the stitch leg of the previous round (40).
Rnd 4: Ch 1, turn. *Sc, drop-down sc pulling up through the two adjacent vertical bars* 20 times (40).
Rnd 5: *Drop-down sc, sc* 20 times — insert for the drop-down sc between the two strands at the point of the V (40).
Rnd 6: Ch 1, turn. *Sc, drop-down sc pulling up through the two adjacent vertical bars* 20 times (40).
Repeat Rnds 5-6: every 2 rounds forms one row of the net pattern. Work 13 net repeats (26 rounds), for a total body height of 28 rounds. Keep 40 sts every round. Fasten off.

Flap (lighter section)
Starting at any st of the body, work 20 sc.
Work flat for about 20 rows (the flap, once seamed, should just cover the bottom edge of the body — adjust the number of rows as needed).
Edging: sc once around all three sides.

Assembly
Fold the flap in half and whipstitch closed, leaving a 1-st gap to thread the drawstring through. Fold the body and whipstitch.
Drawstring: ch 120 or more (a longer cord keeps the flap from opening fully). Thread it through the flap, wrap, and knot to secure.

Notes

Hook: 3.0 mm. Yarn: 4-ply sport-weight cotton, green gradient colorway (dark green body, light green flap). Body = 28 rounds tall (40 sts each), built from 13 repeats of a drop-down-sc net pattern. Flap worked flat ~20 rows then seamed. Drawstring 120+ ch.

Frequently asked questions

What yarn and hook should I use?

Use 4-ply sport-weight cotton with a 3.0 mm hook. The sample uses a green gradient colorway with a darker green body and a lighter green flap.

How tall is the body and how is the net pattern built?

The body is 28 rounds tall, keeping 40 stitches every round, and is built from 13 repeats of the drop-down sc net pattern (Rnds 5-6 repeated, two rounds per net row).

How do I work the drop-down net stitch?

Alternate a regular sc with a drop-down sc, working the drop-down stitch into the stitch leg of the previous round (insert between the two strands at the point of the V) and pulling up through the two adjacent vertical bars. This staggered insertion creates the net texture.

How is the bag assembled and how long should the drawstring be?

Fold the flap in half and whipstitch it closed, leaving a 1-stitch gap for the drawstring, then fold and whipstitch the body. Make the drawstring 120+ chains; a longer cord keeps the flap from opening fully.
